In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, managing network inventory and services efficiently is critical for maintaining global competitiveness and customer satisfaction. BT Global, in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and BT Applied Research, is pioneering a groundbreaking project to address these challenges using Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), commonly known as blockchain.
The Challenges of Multi-Party Network Management
BT’s Global division manages an intricate web of network equipment and services, sourced from multiple manufacturers and managed across various international jurisdictions. This complexity often leads to data discrepancies, lost equipment, and costly disputes, with reverse logistics alone costing approximately GBP 20 million annually. The lack of reliable data from different stakeholders complicates every aspect of inventory management, from compliance with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to customer service.

The Blockchain Solution
Recognizing these challenges, BT has turned to blockchain technology as a viable solution. Blockchain’s inherent qualities—transparency, immutability, and security—make it an ideal platform for creating a “single source of truth” accessible by all parties involved. This project builds on the success of two pilot projects that demonstrated blockchain’s potential to secure and streamline network inventory and service management processes.

Project Goals and Implementation
This project aims to develop an open DLT-based platform for network inventory and service management. This platform will facilitate better data sharing and validation across multiple parties, reducing disputes and improving operational efficiency. Key objectives include:
1. Analyzing Customer Data: Utilizing real-world data to refine the blockchain platform, ensuring it meets the specific needs of BT’s diverse customer base.
2. Evaluating Platform Performance: Assessing the blockchain system’s scalability and efficiency across different operational scenarios.
3. Demonstrating Real-World Benefits: Showcasing the platform’s impact on service quality and inventory management through live demonstrations and customer feedback.

The Road Ahead
By integrating blockchain technology into their service management framework, BT not only anticipates significant cost savings but also aims to enhance customer trust and satisfaction. This project will serve as a model for similar initiatives globally, potentially transforming how companies manage multi-party network inventories and services.
